Primary Purpose
The Patrol Person position (PP) inspects all overhead electrical transmission, distribution and secondary conductors for vegetation and tree encroachments in accordance with state and federal regulatory requirements and internal company procedures. Ensures clearances of vegetation and trees to overhead conductors will maintain the minimum vegetation clearance distances for the annual cycle or defined time period. Communicates with customers as needed for access, informs customers of identified work required, and negotiates tree removals. Utilizes a mobile data terminal (MDT) to record and update all required inspection criteria. Uploads completed inspection daily. Will be assigned work orders regularly with specified timelines for completing inspections. Other duties may include tracking work completed on printed maps. Performs quick patrols on specified circuits prior to, during or post weather events such as storms, Red Flag Warning events and Santa Ana Conditions.


Duties and Responsibilities

–  Receives and completes all assigned work. Patrols on foot and inspects all trees and vegetation in proximity to overhead electrical transmission, distribution and secondary conductors for vegetation encroachments. Performs 360-degree risk assessment on all trees for any hazards including dead or dying trees, trees with disease, structural defects, decay, dead or broken branches, included bark, weak branch attachments, heavy lean toward conductors or equipment, soil erosion, etc. Updates all required fields including tree information, customer information, property information and other required fields. Follow all company policies and procedures, maintain all company assigned equipment, never leave company assigned Mobil Data Terminal (MDT) or cell phones in an unattended vehicle, utilize safety cones and chock block when parked for safety.
–  Engages with customer to ensure property ownership information is correct. If property is inaccessible due to terrain or locked gates, documents and reports locations to the Supervisor. Makes every effort to access, educate and resolve customer refusal to inspect or patrol. Should customer refuse, documents the refusal per company procedure and reports refusal forms to the Supervisor daily for follow up and resolution. Negotiates as needed tree removals on fast and very fast growing tree species, securing customer signature on a removal card.
–  Reports to the Inspection Supervisor daily. Attends required meetings, completes required training, refreshes mobile data terminal as needed, engages IT for technical support, fuels company assigned vehicle, manages scheduled vehicle maintenance, adheres to and maintains compliance with company training, standards, practices and policies.
–  Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


Required Qualifications:

–  H.S. Diploma/GED.
–  3 years – Utility Vegetation Management experience.
–  Ability to address customer concerns and de-escalate potential customer issues, with excellent customer service skills.
–  Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Advanced
–  Skilled in use of computers, laptops and tablets, proficient with Microsoft Office Software and email.
–  Current and valid Class C Drivers License required, Clean driver safety record.
–  Current International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification. Must maintain ISA certification.
–  Requires a minimum of 80% travel within the territory to visit work sites.
–  Requires hiking long distances in rural and urban terrains, with possible encounters with animals and in a variety of weather conditions.


Preferred Qualifications:

–  Technical/Vocational Degree in industry-related field such as Forestry, Biology, Environmental Science, etc. preferred or alternative work experience and training in related industry-related.
–  Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) a plus.
