Safety and Risk Services (SRS) is a unit within the Finance and Administration portfolio. Finance and Administration is a vibrant and varied portfolio serving all aspects of campus life. Safety and Risk Services comprises Emergency Management and Continuity, Environmental Health and Safety, Campus Mapping, Risk & Insurance, and the University of Oregon Police Department. Position Summary
The Hazardous Materials Manager and Chemical Safety Officer reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Radiation Safety Officer at the University of Oregon. This position is responsible for university programs guiding the evaluation and control of chemical hazards, and for programs providing appropriate disposal of hazardous wastes. This position provides technical expertise to the university on chemicals and regulated wastes, manages EHS waste disposal facility infrastructure and supplies/services budget, and directly supervises EHS program staff responsible for dangerous goods shipping, hazardous waste collection and disposal, universal waste collection and disposal, and radioactive waste collection and disposal. Supervision of program staff includes training and mentoring staff development and performance assessment. This position may assign tasks to other EHS staff and student employees, and will coordinate with campus partners to monitor completion of chemical safety and waste management requirements within their operations. This position performs the necessary research, outreach, process management, documentation, and evaluation to ensure programs meet objectives within established budgetary and time constraints. This will include gathering data, preparing analysis, and drafting reports as requested by department leadership.

This position will foster positive relationships with stakeholders and colleagues. Interactions occur daily with the campus community including working closely and collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts, students, and data and business analysts. This position will make strategic decisions for Safety and Risk Services programs using direction from institutional polices and standards and in consultation with unit leadership.

This position represents the University’s interest by taking or recommending actions implementing University policies, and local, state, and federal regulation. This position has the authority to make decision necessary to eliminate immediately dangerous hazards to student and employee safety. This position also serves as a campus response coordinator on the EHS Duty Administrator Team.

This position requires current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or will successfully acquire certification within 6 months of hire. This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree with a focus in chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, molecular biology, or environmental health & safety related science.
• Five (5) years professional experience with the assessment and control of chemical hazards or processes such as chemical synthesis, molecular biology, or hazardous production materials.
• Five (5) years professional experience with the appropriate characterization and disposal of hazardous wastes.
• Experience working directly with operators and leadership of chemical use and waste generation facilities.
• Experience working directly with regulators.

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree (M.S., M.Eng., Ph.D. or PE) with a focus in chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, molecular biology, or environmental health & safety related science.
• Current professional certification attesting to expertise in chemistry, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene, or related fields.
• Professional experience operating a RCRA hazardous waste management facility in a college or university setting.
• Three (3) or more years’ experience supervising subordinate staff.
• Experience writing educational, training, communications and/or publicity materials.
• Experience leading or facilitating teams of diverse and influential stakeholders.
