Director of Supplemental Instruction and Content Tutoring Services
Hiring Salary Range: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00/Year
Under the general direction of the Faculty Director, the Director of Supplemental Instruction and Content Tutoring Services acts to advance student retention, success, and goal completion at UC San Diego. The Director partners and collaborates to support UC San Diego's creation of an equity-focused student success ecosystem. The position collaborates with campus partners in leading student success initiatives. The Director has operational responsibilities for Supplemental Instruction and Content Tutoring Services, including budget management, program assessment and planning, and hiring, training, and supervision of student academic employees. The Director is expected to build close relationships with academic departments, faculty, and units with a goal toward closing equity gaps for historically underrepresented, minoritized students. This includes working closely with faculty teaching large enrollment introductory courses in STEM and other courses with high WDF grades. The Director serves on university committees related to academic support and student success initiatives, and, in partnership with faculty and administrators, seeks funding opportunities and develops new programs.
The Director works collaboratively with Teaching + Learning Commons colleagues to develop and oversee support programs for students; design and coordinate education programs for academic student employees; lead ongoing assessment of program effectiveness; and foster strong collaborations with faculty, academic departments, and relevant campus units (e.g., Office of Academic Support & Instructional Studies (OASIS), Summer Success Programs, First-Year Experience courses, the Office of Academic Integrity, and the Undergraduate College Academic Advising staff). The Director serves as an integral member of the Commons' Leadership Team. The Leadership Team plays a key role in developing and sustaining a culture of equity collaboration within the Commons and campus-wide, and developing and implementing methods for assessing the impact of the Teaching+ Learning Commons initiatives and programs on student learning.
• Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
• Master's degree and at least four (4) years full-time professional experience directing or working in and academic setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver and maintain academic support programs.
• High level of administrative management experience, including planning, leadership, and analysis. Skills in performance evaluation.
• Broad knowledge in learning theories. Knowledge of and experience with applying equity and asset-based learning theories to student academic support programs and services. Experience and skills in serving historically marginalized students. A commitment to equity and to ensuring the success of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
• Broad knowledge in strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
• Strong critical thinking skills, with a demonstrated ability to analyze situations, identify existing and potential problems, evaluate and recommend solutions, and implement, assess, and revise resolution efforts.
• Proven organizational skills and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to independently plan, prioritize, and establish deadlines for tasks to ensure project completion while also allowing for conflicting schedules and changing priorities.
• Proven interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, graduate students, undergraduate student employees, and professional and administrative staff.
• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
• Duties may require direct contact and/or supervision of children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
