Under the general direction of the Deputy Division Chief, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Headquarters Division of Transportation Planning (DOTP), the position acts as a technical expert performing complex and mission critical housing and transportation work, including developing and implementing solutions that allow Caltrans to use excess land for affordable housing, developing solutions to address homelessness and ensure a safe transportation system, acting as the DOTP subject matter expert for housing and transportation work, coordinating with other divisions, and communicating public messages about Caltrans’ housing and transportation work. This position requires strong public outreach and engagement, communication, partnership, and strategic thinking skills, as well as a deep commitment to Caltrans’ strategic vision, mission, values, and goals, to provide excellent customer service, and to advance equity through all efforts.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Planner Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g. transfer, permissive reinstatement or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
