Diablo Valley College inspires, educates, and empowers a diverse community of students to transform their lives and their communities. To help further this work, DVC seeks a tenure-track English as a Second Language instructor to start in August 2022. We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students. We are looking for instructors who share a strong commitment to social and racial justice and who use or are inspired to use anti-racist pedagogies that close equity gaps by recognizing, understanding, and respecting the perspectives of all students. We’re looking for an engaged, equity-minded, and student-focused colleague to join our diverse English and ESL faculty. We recognize that students come to us with different goals and varying levels of ability, and we strive to create an ESL program that is responsive to their changing needs. Our expanding program offers traditional academic ESL courses in integrated reading and writing, grammar and oral communication skills at all levels, as well as non-credit and vocational ESL courses. These courses take place across multiple modalities—on-campus, online, and hybrid. In all areas of the ESL program, equity remains the core of our work and informs our pedagogy, extra-curricular support for students, and professional development for faculty. The successful candidate will also demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities of community college students.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College’s shared governance processes.
Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis OR Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language OR California Community College Credential which allows you to teach ESL OR the equivalent.

1. Demonstrated commitment to student learning and to the success of all students in the open-access learning environment of a community college; 2. Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, and cultures, as well as students with disabilities; 3. Demonstrated commitment to addressing the diverse needs of ESL/multilingual students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences including immigrants, refugees, international students, students transferring from adult schools, gen 1.5 students, undocumented students, and students from under-represented and/or under-served populations; 4. Training, experience and/or interest in teaching a broad range of ESL courses in a variety of dynamic modalities, including face-to-face, online, hybrid, or other web-based learning environments; 5. Training, experience, and/or interest in teaching noncredit and contextualized/career-focused ESL classes as well as integrated reading and writing, oral-communication skills, and grammar classes across a broad range of levels, from beginning and intermediate academic ESL, to college-level courses such as first-year college English and second-year composition and critical thinking for ESL/multilingual students; 6. Training, experience, and/or or interest in teaching oral-communication skills at all levels (from academic beginning to college level), with a focus on listening, speaking, conversation and pronunciation; 7. Training, experience, and/or interest in coordinating an ESL program that provides a range of support for ESL/multilingual students, including enrollment and registration assistance, ESL tutoring, ESL-oriented tutoring for other subject areas, ESL-focused academic advising, and outreach to both the college and the community to determine student need. 8. Demonstrated commitment to collaboration with colleagues, both in the department and across the College, including a desire to support ESL faculty through thoughtful communication, facilitation of meetings, and professional development. 9. Demonstrated commitment to self-reflection and adaptation both in the classroom and as a member of the department and college community.
