ABOUT SOS MEALS ON WHEELS

SOS Meals on Wheels is a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to fostering the independence and dignity of older adults by reducing food insecurity and isolation, with daily nutritious meals, friendly visits and connection to support services.

SOS Meals on Wheels produces and delivers over 500,000 meals annually for homebound seniors living in Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Fremont, Newark and Union City (the last three as of September 2023).  As advocates for senior citizens, the organization’s mission is to provide a nutritious meal delivered by a friendly face that also acts as a wellness check, allowing seniors to remain independent in their homes as long as safely possible.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Salary range for this role is: $120,000-$130,000

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Development Director will play a crucial role in securing the necessary resources to support the mission of SOS Meals on Wheels to provide nutritious meals and compassionate services to homebound seniors in our community, and to achieve the vision set by the recently developed Strategic Plan.

The Director of Development will be responsible for leading and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy, forging key partnerships, and cultivating a network of supporters to drive sustainable growth and impact, and guiding the Volunteer department’s work in recruiting and utilizing volunteers. This role requires a fearless strategic thinker with exceptional relationship-building skills, and a demonstrated track record of successful fundraising.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and manages three direct reports including the Development Associate, Volunteer Coordinator and Community Outreach Coordinator.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising Strategy and Execution:

In collaboration with the Executive Director, Board and consultant(s), develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet the organization’s financial needs and support its growth objectives.
Identify and pursue diverse fundraising channels, including major gifts, corporate partnerships, individual donations, grants, and planned giving programs.
Conduct ongoing prospect research to identify new funding opportunities.
Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of potential donors.

 

Growth Strategy and Execution:

Set and achieve ambitious fundraising goals, in order to sustain the growth the organization has seen over the past four years.
Partner with the Executive Director to design and execute an annual giving program that will expand the image of SOS Meals on Wheels and increase community support.
Stay abreast of new and best practices regarding donor engagement, acquisition and retention, nonprofit marketing and advertising.
Partner with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and consultants to design and support the launch of a Capital Campaign within the next three to five years.

 

Major Gifts and Donor Cultivation:

Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, corporations, and other potential sources of significant funding.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to engage key stakeholders in cultivation activities and solicitation efforts.
Organize donor and volunteer appreciation events and engagement opportunities to foster a sense of community and commitment among supporters.

 

Grant Writing and Management:

Collaborate with grant writing consultants and staff on the development and submission of grant proposals, ensuring compliance with all grant requirements and deadlines.
Work closely with program staff to gather relevant data and information to strengthen grant applications and reports.
Track and report on grant outcomes and impact to donors and funders.
Corporate Partnerships and Sponsorships:

Identify and engage corporate partners, aligning their social responsibility goals with the organization’s mission.
Negotiate sponsorships, cause-marketing opportunities, and in-kind donations to maximize support for SOS Meals on Wheels.
Individual Giving and Donor Relations:

Develop and launch an individual giving program
Implement donor stewardship initiatives, ensuring timely acknowledgment, recognition, and ongoing communication with individual donors.
Oversee management of the donor database to ensure accurate tracking of gifts and donor engagement.

 

Event Planning and Fundraising:

Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events (one to two per year) to raise awareness and financial support for the organization’s mission.
Collaborate with marketing and communications partners to promote events and engage participants.
Budgeting and Reporting:

Work closely with the finance team to establish and monitor development-related budgets.
Provide regular reports and updates on fundraising progress to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

 

Volunteer Management:

Oversee the Volunteer Coordinator and assist with the development of comprehensive recruitment plans.
Establish and track metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of volunteer recruitment efforts and volunteer retention.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years in nonprofit fundraising, development, or a related field, with a strong track record of meeting fundraising goals.
Familiarity with the fundraising landscape in Alameda County and the greater East Bay preferred
Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, corporate partnerships, and grants.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey the organization’s mission compellingly to diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and inspire donors, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Proficiency in using donor management software and CRM systems.
Passion for the SOS Meals on Wheels mission and the challenges faced by homebound seniors
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
Strong knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Word, Excel)
Ability to be an individual contributor as well as a team player.
Excellent organizational skills, sensitive to detail and deadlines in a multitasking environment.
A reliable, working vehicle as well as applicable insurance.
