JOB SUMMARY:

As clinical provider, performs, completes and oversees the full range of general dentistry treatment activities to ensure appropriate dental health standards and practices are maintained for patients

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current and valid U.S. State license to practice dentistry; Arizona license within one year of hire
  • Graduation from an accredited program of study by the American Dental Association; DDS or DMD
  • Completion of an American Dental Association approved clinical residency program in the specialty area; Board Certification designation preferred
  • Current basic CPR designation or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire

WORKING ENVIRONMENT (PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS):

  • Regular and recurring exposure to risks associated with exposure to radiographs, blood and blood products; regularly exposed to contagious diseases, caustic reagents, flammable liquids and sharps; regularly required to wear personal protective equipment
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled hospital based dental clinic subject to long periods of sitting, standing and walking; frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides comprehensive dental examination and diagnosis of patients through use of history, radiographs and other appropriate tests
  • Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries and malformation of teeth and oral structure within scope of clinical privileges
  • Prescribes medications for control of infection, pain, viral, bacterial and fungal infections
  • Reviews medical histories and records dental treatments in medical charts to ensure proper and timely documentation
  • May participate in evaluation and verification of employee performance through review of completed work assignments and work techniques to ensure adherence with established practice, methods and procedures
  • Examines teeth, takes and/or reviews oral radiographs to establish a plan of care to restore teeth and reviews with patient and/or patient family to ensure understanding
  • Performs a variety of restorative and/or corrective procedures including, but not limited to: prepares teeth for amalgam or like filling, takes impressions and identifies type of corrective appliance, fits and/or seats permanent or removable dental appliances, performs simple extractions of teeth and applies/removes sutures as appropriate
  • Administers topical and local anesthesia and monitors patient’s reaction; takes appropriate action and/or pre-caution to ensure ongoing patient safety
  • Provides instructions in oral hygiene and methods/practices to prevent spread of oral diseases
  • Provides guidance and direction to Dental Assistants, Hygienists and other support staff
  • Responds to and provides emergency treatment of teeth and oral surfaces resulting from trauma, pain and/or infection within scope of clinical privileges
  • Works collaboratively with other medical and specialty areas of dentistry to discuss and obtain consultative services for cases requiring multi-disciplinary approach
  • Participates in departmental orientation, on the job training and quality assurance programs/initiatives
  • Participates in a variety of department and hospital educational programs to maintain current skill and competency levels; identifies and discusses performance or training needs with Supervisor
