Background: InterTribal Buffalo Council, a federally chartered tribal organization located in Rapid City, SD, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to serve as Executive Director for our organization. ITBC was formed in 1992 to restore buffalo to tribal lands. We are comprised of 75 member nations who we serve through administering federal grants, facilitating the transport of surplus buffalo from public to tribal lands, and providing technical assistant to Tribes who want to start or grow their buffalo herds, among other services.
Responsibilities: The Executive Director oversees the day-to-day management of the ITBC office, including supervision of the ITBC staff. The Executive Director works closely with the ITBC President and legal counsel on a variety of issues and is required to provide reports to the ITBC Board of Directors quarterly and ITBC membership annually. Specific duties will include:
· Administer ITBC grants and contracts;
· Advocate for ITBC legislation;
· Attend conferences and meetings with agencies and intergovernmental, nonprofit, and tribal organizations;
· Manage ITBC finances and personnel;
· Organize ITBC events;
· Work with federal and state agencies on buffalo restoration;
· Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
Travel Required: Applicants will be expected to travel for this position.
Conditions of Employment: A background investigation and drug test are required for acceptance of employment. If hired, applicants will need to provide a valid driver’s license. Applicants requesting Indian preference will be required to show they are enrolled with a federally recognized tribe. The successful applicant will be subject to a 90-day probation period.
Experience: Applicants should have significant office management experience. Experience with federal contracting—especially Public Law 93-638 contracts—is desirable. Experience with wildlife—especially buffalo—and Native American law is preferred.
