Job Summary:
The Staff Accountant Specialist is responsible for assisting Controller in multiple accounting department duties, i.e. accounting, and organizing support documents related to NPAIHB’s Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Accounts Receivable/Grants, and in accordance with the NPAIHB Finance Manual. The position collaborates closely with the Controller in the maintenance and administration of the finance department’s financial systems.

Essential Functions:
1. Responsible for Accounting General Ledger Functions
Assist with preparation entry to record payroll and related journal entries
Assist with preparation month-end journal entries as assigned
Backup to Controller-reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
Backup to Controller-reconciliation of all bank accounts
Prepare reports as requested to increase efficiencies within the accounting department
Assist accounting team in Monthly Closings
Collaborate with Controller in Monthly and Year-end closings
2. Assist with accounting for NPAIHB’s grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts
Assist with budget updates, correspondence, and expenditure reports in a timely manner as requested.
Responsible for master grant cost center file maintenance.
Assist with calculating Indirect Costs attributable to grants and contracts.
Assist with GL accounts relating to Grant and Contract Receivables, and Grant/Contract Revenues and Expenses.
Assist in and prepare periodic financial reports to funding agencies, as required.
Assist, as necessary, allowable costs and correct allocations to cost centers
Assist, as necessary, Fund Accountant in monitoring budget overages and information to program directors

3. Other duties:
Responsible for master vendor file setup and maintenance for purchasing and accounts payable
Responsible for master employee file setup and maintenance for payroll
Work with Accounts Payable and Payroll Manager, as necessary, to review coding of Accounts Payable and Payroll, assuring allowability of costs and correct allocation to cost centers
Review proposed funding requests and update budgets as necessary
Assist in coordination of external audit
Assist in the research of and negotiation any potential audit concerns

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field or equivalent experience
Knowledge of and experience working in a tribal community, tribal organization or other Indian Qualified Native applicants are given preference.
Three or more years of full charge accounting experience is required; three or more years of experience with advanced non-profit accounting software applications is required – Sage Intacct preferred
Experience working with grants and contracts funding and budgets preferred
The successful applicant must be able to use Microsoft Office-specifically Word, Excel, Outlook
Demonstrated accuracy and scrupulous attention to detail is required
Must demonstrate the ability to complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner
Must demonstrate excellent analytical skills
Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent writing and grammars kills are required
