Overview
Position Summary:
This is the entry level class in the public works Landscaping series. Incumbents receive work which provides an opportunity to learn the terminology, processes and procedures, tools and equipment used in one or more areas of public works landscape field. Under direct or indirect supervision, performs a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled tasks related to the repair, maintenance and minor construction work within the landscape areas throughout RSIC. Incumbents are normally expected to develop the necessary qualifications for upward promotion within the department if such position becomes available.
Under direct supervision performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled to skilled tasks relating to the landscape maintenance and construction within the Colony areas for landscaping. The purpose of this position is to provide a person with quality training through extensive work experience and/or formal classes. Work experience will be under the direction of a higher skilled Landscape Supervisor position. It is expected that the person will learn and become proficient in the safe operation of the tools and equipment used in the landscape maintenance of the RSIC projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Performs general to semi-skilled work in the installation of landscaped areas and open spaces. Assists a higher-level Landscape worker in the maintenance of Colony facilities. Will be assigned to skilled (journey) level Landscape worker to acquire and build skills for the duration of assigned projects.
• Collects debris, cuts weeds and performs other miscellaneous maintenance work as assigned.
a) Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties
b) Mow lawn either by hand or using a riding lawnmower
c) Cut lawn using hand, power, or riding mower and trim and edge around walks, flower beds and walls.
d) Landscape by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes
e) Apply pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks and others
f) Apply fertilizer to ground to enhance growth
g) (winter)Shovel snow from walkways and sprinkle ice down to keep people from falling
h) Cut down tree limbs that are posing a danger
i) Trim shrubs and pull weeds
j) Rake, mulch and prune the grounds as needed
k) Water plants and grass as needed and apply fertilizer
• Will become proficient over time with the safe operation of hand and power tools and equipment used
• landscaping maintenance work.
• Reads and understands department procedure manuals, equipment operation manuals, and other manuals to become familiar with equipment, tools, and project procedures.
• Attends work on a regular and dependable basis.
• Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with Colony staff and the public.
• Occasionally Performs landscape construction and maintenance work. Assists in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of sprinkler systems and other equipment. Plants and maintains lawns, plants and trees.
• Occasionally may assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.
• Performs various winter maintenance activities as needed: e.g., snowplow, clearing of walks, and driveways, etc.
• Operate vehicles and equipment as required. May be required to obtain and maintain a CDL license.
• May assist in trash pickup, building maintenance, snow removal as well as other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
• Prefer previous experience in performing basic landscape maintenance and construction work.
• Able to independently perform assignments related to a specific work area.
• Communicate, read, write and understand English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
• Understand and follow specific oral instructions.
• Perform manual laborer for extended periods of time.
• Get along with fellow employees.
• Possession of a valid Nevada State driver’s license as required. is required at the time of appointment.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to frequently stoop, bend, and kneel. Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Ability to perform sustained and vigorous activities in a variety of environments, temperatures, and weather conditions.
• Skills in teamwork and communication including problem solving, interpersonal sensitivity, adaptability/flexibility and time management.
• Possession of or ability to secure and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
• Indian Preference will apply.
