Overview

Based in Irvine California, under the direction of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Director, Investment Strategies is responsible for broad asset class investments including developing and recommending investment structure and policy, monitoring managers, and implementing Investment Board approved plans on a risk-relative basis to attain portfolio-optimization. With the long-term financial health of the tribal nation in mind, the Director, Investment Strategies works closely with the CIO to implement a portfolio across traditional and alternative asset classes, helping to manage investment team members. This position also manages, implements, maintains and explains strategies, and readily addresses a wide range of markets and issues.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

1. Sources and leads relationships with top investment managers across all private and public investment categories. Leverages network of relationships with investment managers and peers. Collaborates closely with advisory resources including ex-officios and consultants.

2. Leads and manages portfolio construction for asset categories, recommending complementary investment managers and sizing allocations to help manage risk and generate returns.

3. Helps manage relationships with the Investment Board, refining materials and messaging to communicate key information.  Participates in presentations and discussions to arrive at decisions and continue to move the strategy towards the objectives.

4. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to any public health emergency.

Supervisory Responsibilities 
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.   Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.

Education/Experience/Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Financial Engineering (MFE), Finance or related field is required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of institutional investment experience including seven (7) years helping to implement sophisticated portfolios and strategies for institutional assets required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) of experience managing functions, teams or departments required.
  • Demonstrated multi-asset class expertise is required.
  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.
  • Strong analytical skills for any needed research, written proposals, specifications, strategy details, and documented assumptions required.
  • Ability to communicate concepts in a manner that is understandable to anyone with minimal background in finance required.
  • Ability to review, analyze and recommend investments across traditional and alternative asset classes required.
  • Prior experience in preparing written reports and presentations to senior leadership and investment committees required.
  • Prior experience with negotiations, contract development, and due diligence required.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations 

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.
  • As a condition of employment with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Investment Strategies department, incumbents are required to undergo and successfully pass pre-employment and annual post-employment background investigation including, but not limited to, Live-Scan fingerprinting, drug screening and criminal history background check.
  • Professional certification such as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) is preferred.
