Overview

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This Habitat Restoration Technician will help implement habitat restoration and other botanical tasks, especially the propagation and care of the federally endangered Lithophragma maximum. This position requires a “green thumb”, extreme attention to detail, and high organizational skills. This is a part-time (4 hours/day from 7 am- 11 am), hourly position with possibility of extension into full-time starting in January 2023. The starting salary is $22.10/hour. Relocation benefits will not be offered.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Propagation and care of Lithophragma maximum (25%)
Germination testing for Lithophragma maximum and other native species (10%)
Removal of non-native species chemically, manually and mechanically (10%)
Installation of erosion control material (1%)
Collection and propagation of native plant propagules (5%)
Maintenance of greenhouse and nursery facilities (15%)
Installation and maintenance of native species out-plantings (5%)
Monitoring of rare plant populations (5%)
Data entry and analysis (15%)
Other duties as assigned (9%)

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS
SERG is looking to hire someone with the following qualifications and professional skills.

Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in botany, ecology, biology, or related field
Valid driver’s license
Legal working status in the US

Skills/Abilities

Demonstrated propagation and native plant care skills
Excellent physical fitness
Ability to study for and obtain a qualified applicator certificate from the California Department of pesticide Regulation
Willingness to apply herbicide
Ability to carry over 30 lbs of herbicide solution in backpack sprayer for several hours in hot conditions
Willingness to perform outdoor duties in all weather conditions
Ability to repetitively carry over 40 lbs objects, kneel, crouch, and stand.
Ability to pass a background check to obtain clearance for military base access
Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with coworkers, management, and clients
Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity
Ability and willingness to understand and follow work rules and procedures
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Highly motivated self-starter, with a high energy level and strong interpersonal skills
Well organized, ability to meet deadlines, detail oriented
Possesses good judgment and common sense.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS

Experience propagating and caring for endangered plants
Experience with pollen viability experiments
Familiarity with southern California flora
Experience with GIS
CA QAL or QAC
