Job Description
Title: kitchen Assistant Department: Early Learning Center
Hourly/Salary: Hourly Rep orts To: ELC Director
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Cook and Director, performs all activities relating to food preparation including clean- up, health, safety and sanitation procedures. Assist in the administration of a comprehensive cross cultural food program for the Early Learning Center’s School Age children.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Prepares traditional foods in conjunction with balanced and special needs diets that meet the dietary requirements of the USDA for each age group of children.
Assist the cook in food preparation and food service.
Weekly and monthly cleaning and planning.
Prepares the USDA Reports each month.
Do inventory of food and non-food supplies.
Assists in the health, safety and sanitation procedures.
Maintains a good working relationship with staff, volunteer, community agencies and personnel from host site.
Work with children and their special needs with special focus on traditional native issues and cultural teachings.
Assist children in developing appropriate social skills and traditional Native American values.
Help with the daily academics that are designed to stimulate learning.
Maintain current CPR/FIRST AID, Food Handler’s Permit and any other certificates as needed by the ELC.
Before leaving at night, assure that carts with dishes, cups, appropriate silverware, etc., and food is prepared for breakfast, for the following day.
Any other duties that pertain to the position as designated by ELC Director.
Secondary Functions:
Perform other duties as assigned by the ELC Director or Supervisor.
Remain knowledgeable in Early Childhood Education.
Education and or Experience:
High School Diploma or GED
USDA Training
Experience working with children in a classroom setting.
Ability to flex hours as needed and must be adaptable to change.
Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
Drug Test and background Check.
Valid First Aid CPR ,Food Handler’s Certifications.
Must have good written and verbal communication skills, with concern for and understanding of low-income families.
Strong organization and planning abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of preparation of all types of cooked foods and baked goods (meat, vegetables, soups, gravies, breads, etc.) to feed 25 – 125 people.
Use and care of basic kitchen equipment.
Understanding of food safety and sanitation, including, but not limited to HACCP system, FIFO rotation, food borne illness prevention, etc.
Skill in the use of standardized recipes. Knowledge and skill in increasing and reducing standard recipes.
Ability to work closely with children, volunteers and staff.
Must maintain a current food handler’s permit.
Specific Job Skills:
State/Tribal background checks required.
Employee must submit to FBI fingerprinting.
Valid Washington State Drivers License
