Position: Temporary Assistant Director – Tribal Governance Concentration and Tacoma Cohort, Master of Public Administration (MPA)

Position Purpose

The purpose of this position is to provide support for: the administration and implementation of the Master in Public Administration (MPA) Tribal Governance (TG) concentration’s and Tacoma cohort’s programmatic needs; current and potential MPA-TG and Tacoma students; external relations for the concentration; and the administration and governance of the MPA program.

Nature and Scope

This position is distinct in its relationship to American Indian communities. This position interacts with Native communities on a regular and sustained basis requiring the development of relationships, both personal and professional; the establishment of trust and reliability; and service to Indian communities. A deep understanding of Indian Country, cultures, and ways of being are critical to this position.

 

The Assistant Director reports to the MPA program Director and works as a team with the Assistant Director, MPA (AD MPA), other graduate program staff, and MPA faculty.

 

Position Purpose and Special Note

This position is a temporary, full-time, overtime eligible position located on the Olympia and Tacoma campus of The Evergreen State College; this position requires the ability to work on the Evergreen Olympia and Tacoma campuses; travel will be required and an occasional telework option may be available (case-specific). The planned duration of this temporary position is through September 15th, 2026 (possibility of extension depending on funding).

 

Essential Functions

· Actively recruit students into the tribal governance concentration area of the MPA program including communicate with and counsel prospective and newly admitted Native American students; attend events; visit tribal colleges; meet with prospective students on regional reservations; work with other Indian Education programs on campus; and other related duties.

· Develop and maintain communication and relationships with Tacoma organizations, government agencies and relevant colleges and universities.

· Develop and maintain prospective student contacts and database.

· Manage student events in collaboration with MPA staff and faculty.

· Track the status of students from admission to graduation; provide support and assistance as needed in areas such as admission requirements, internships, incompletes, leaves of absence, and eligibility for graduation.

 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

· Ability to develop and maintain relationships with culturally diverse communities particularly American Indian, Alaskan Native, and/or Native Hawaiian communities.

· Skill in and ability to provide academic counseling including advising and tracking progress of students.

· Ability to use Microsoft 365, student information system (Banner), customer relationship management systems (CRMs), etc.; ability and willingness to learn new technology as needed.

· Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

· Timely and effective project management skills, including the ability to respond to Program phone and email inquiries within two business days 95% of the time.

 

Desired Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree.

· One year of experience in public or nonprofit administration, educational administration student services program administration, or related field.

· Experience working with culturally diverse communities, representatives, and individuals, particularly American Indian, Alaskan Native, and/or Native Hawaiian communities.

· Experience in administering programs in higher education and developing higher education admission and recruitment programs.

 

Salary and Benefits: $5182 – $5753 per month of full-time work + excellent benefits including paid sick and vacation leave; paid campus holidays; a generous medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance package.

 

Conditions of Employment

· Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.

· Must be able to travel, work occasional evenings and/or weekends, assist with program events outside of normal business hours, and move boxes of recruitment or printed materials.
