The Capacity Building Program Manager works directly with the business unit’s Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director to advance the Healthy Cities Program’s strategies that focus on equitably building cool, healthy, and climate resilient cities in Arizona, with a focus on the Phoenix Metro Area. The Capacity Building Program Manager will help design and implement programs and initiatives that improve tree care and maintenance to support a healthy tree cover and that strengthen the capacity of residents and local organizations working in frontline communities, so they have the knowledge and skills to advocate for greener neighborhoods. They will build new partnerships and foster existing relationships with key stakeholders to improve the health of urban trees to advance the Healthy Cities Program’s goal to increase tree canopy cover in frontline communities in the 10 large municipalities in the Phoenix Metro Area.

We’re looking for a passionate, dedicated person to join our Chapter and work within our Healthy Cities team. Systems Leadership, creativity, and the ability to influence without authority are key in this role. Come join TNC and apply today! Position is based out of our Phoenix, Arizona office.
In this role, you will establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner, particularly with stakeholders in the landscaping industry and in community-based organizations. You will also build new partnerships and foster existing relationships to broaden engagement in frontline communities to implement and advocate for solutions that mitigate heat. In addition, you will be developing programs and projects with partners to improve the health of urban trees in the hottest neighborhoods. May supervise other staff members, volunteers, vendors and/or contractors. Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
A. Strategy Development and Implementation (approximately 25%)
1. Lead implementation of Healthy Cities Program strategies identified in Arizona Strategic Plan, particularly those strategies focused on building grassroots capacity and improving tree care and maintenance
2. In collaboration with the Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director, contribute to development and implementation of detailed Healthy Cities 3-year business plan
3. Evaluate and measure progress on capacity building strategies
B. Building and Sustaining Relationships (approximately 25%)
1. Facilitate cross-learning between the Conservancy, communities, and key partners to adapt conservation strategies and practices to be more equitable
2. Develop, steward and advance key strategic partnerships with community-based organizations, academia, government agencies, conservation partners and others to advance the Conservancy’s priorities
C. Project Management (approximately 35%)
1. Manage projects at various scales, encompassing multiple goals and coordinating the work of professionals inside and outside of the organization
2. Oversee project management activities including coordinating multiple projects, developing and tracking project work plans, partner grant agreements, as well as tracking project expenditures and timelines
3. Strengthen and expand existing efforts related to grassroots capacity building in the Phoenix Metro Area to advance community priorities
4. May supervise volunteers and contractors (currently does not supervise staff, but may do so in the future).
D. Other (15%)
1. In collaboration with the Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director, work with the Development team to raise funds for projects including developing proposals, reports, presentations and cultivating donors
2. Represent the Conservancy at public events, partnership meetings and on various committees that support community-focused urban conservation strategies, as needed
3. Accurately and timely complete administrative functions such as timecard entries, expense reports and self-evaluations.

What You’ll Bring:
BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
Experience negotiating.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated; fluency in Spanish to facilitate reaching key stakeholders
Experience working at a grassroots level on community advocacy or capacity building
5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
Hands on knowledge with best practices for community engagement and experience working with diverse communities
Experience and commitment to working across differences such as race, culture, socio economic class and language
Demonstrated experience in partnership development with community groups, nonprofit partners and/or government agencies in the Phoenix Metro Area
Knowledge of current trends and practices in equity, climate mitigation and adaptation, urban conservation, urban forestry, landscape maintenance or related fields
Awareness and experience in environmental and/or social justice related work
Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization and with program partners
Knowledge and understanding of the Phoenix Metro Area political, cultural and nonprofit landscape
Knowledge of and relationships with the landscaping industry in the Phoenix Metro Area
Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Spanish.
Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
Politically savvy.
