The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Manager develops, manages, and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for large-scale geographic areas. The Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area (MRCMA) consists of 5,200 acres of deeded land owned by The Nature Conservancy, and 48,500 acres of federal land. The MRCMA is cooperatively managed with the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and US Forest Service; and the Preserve Manager is The Nature Conservancy’s on-site manager.
The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Manager will develop, manage and advance conservation programs for more than 50,000 acres within the second largest unfragmented landscape of the American Southwest. The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of MRCMA and provides technical support for all associated activities, including supervision of employees/volunteers.
Essential functions include:
Approx. 40%: Plan and direct preserve management programs and land stewardship
Approx. 25%: Work with Muleshoe CMA and other agency, NGO, community, and academic partners
Approx. 15%: Arizona business unit cross function coordination and participation
Approx. 15%: Supervision and training
Approx. 5%: Administration
Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development.
Gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
Employs a full range of management and communication tools to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities.
The ideal candidate will have the following
BA/BS, law, business or natural resource related degree and 5 years’ experience in natural resource management OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience negotiating complex agreements.
Experience communicating with public and/or media both in writing and verbally (includes explaining conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences).
Experience with principles of landscape level conservation and/or watershed management; and ecological land management principles.
Experience working with computers and related software, such as Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word), “Box”, web browsers and internet research.
Experience with principles of land acquisition.
Experience working from a remote site far from resources and with limited communication to complete monitoring, construction, and maintenance projects.
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience in land management conservation practice and conservation science.
Experience working with prescribed fire planning and implementation.
Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource management.
Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
Working with partners to accomplish complex projects.
Working with politics and society with respect to environmental affairs including local community.
Working with media and influential officials, especially governmental, to improve Conservancy programs’ outcomes.
Completing tasks independently, accurately and with respect to timeline(s).
Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
Explaining conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
Knowledge of the flora and fauna of the southwest.
Knowledge of land management conservation practice and conservation science including current trends and practices in conservation
Willingness to develop additional skillsets required to maintain and repair the building infrastructure, operate and maintain ranch equipment, and work remotely to maintain, repair, and develop fences, wells, etc., in the backcountry.
Working in rugged terrain, inclement weather, and remote conditions. Includes wild fires, rattlesnakes, bears, etc.
Making sound decisions on legal, financial, conservation and reporting issues.
Applying science to decision-making and guide activities.
Communicate and working closely with scientists, agency partners, indigenous communities, TNC staff and the general public.
