The Program Coordinator oversees programs and services dedicated to supporting an inclusive environment that foster a sense of belonging for students from diverse Indigenous backgrounds and provides an opportunity to impact the larger university community’s educational experiences. The Program Coordinator will plan and implement initiatives to support the personal, social, and academic development of American Indian students with an understanding of the unique cultural experiences and perspectives of this population. Reporting to the Director of the AIHC, the position will partner with faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to create an inclusive campus environment that encourages American Indian students to achieve academic excellence.

Note:  The position is grant-funded and time-limited through September 30, 2025. Continuation after this date is contingent upon funding.

• Support the ongoing development of Native American students through holistic processes of: Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, and Physical Well-Being through in-person workshops, monthly grade checks, and course discussion.
• Complete training to become an academic advisor
• Develop and implement programs, services and initiatives that strengthen Native American and Indigenous student education, using relevant student development theories and practices
• Plan and facilitate monthly workshops (in-person and virtual) that provide students with the tools and knowledge to be successful during their pursuit of a postsecondary degree (ie: understanding a transcript, understanding financial aid, understanding degree pathways, study skills, etc)
• Prepare reports based on student progress toward academic goals; regularly communicate the progress, outcomes and direction of work to the Director to inform senior leadership and campus partners of outcomes and progress
• Coordinate outreach efforts to raise awareness of the various programs and resources available for students at UNCP
• Recruit, hire, and supervise tutors
• Partner with the Center for Student Success to provide support and academic coaching to American Indian students who receive academic warning, academic probation, and academic suspension
• Coordinates activities of support staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers engaged in implementation and administration of program objectives.
• Coordinate all academic support initiatives hosted by the AIHC
• Maintain regular communication with faculty, the Center for Student Success, the Writing Center, University College, and other key partners to assess the academic needs of American Indian students
• Provides consultation on an individual basis and on-going advocacy for cultural communities to ensure the quality of their academic, social and personal experience
• Perform other related duties and participate in committees and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:  Master’s degree strongly preferred in Higher Education or related field.
Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory, college access, and major trends and issues faced by Native American student populations.
At least two years of experience working directly with Native American students (e.g. tribes, community organizations, educational settings, etc.).
Direct experience developing and implementing programs that support Native American students from an intersectional framework.
Demonstrated experience working with Native American communities, especially tribal communities in North Carolina.
Computer literacy knowledge and ability to utilize office equipment and computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Excel, Power Point, and social media)
Expertise in delivering program and education services to diverse populations
Ability to acknowledge, affirm and advocate for under-represented groups
Demonstrated experience in the design, development and implementation of curriculum and cultural programs for the Native American student community
Ability to navigate university systems to pull, interpret, and analyze data and adapt programming accordingly
Demonstrated effective interpersonal, public relations, organizational and communication skills.
Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with Alumni, students, parents, and stakeholders
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
